Making Better Thought-Movies One Truth At A Time

What Is My Conscience
How Can It Help Me?

Our conscience controls our reaction to thoughts, imaginations, words, and actions. How can the conscience be trained to serve us correctly?

Our conscience is like a baseball umpire...

Located in a person's "spiritual heart", the conscience lets us know when we have violated our personal inner moral code, and prompts us to make corrections. This then allows peace to come back into our mind.

Our conscience also warns us when we have a problem

The "conscience" and "peace"connection...

Colossians 3.15 is an amazing verse.

And let the peace (soul harmony which comes) from Christ rule (act as umpire continually) in your hearts [deciding and settling with finality all questions that arise in your minds, in that peaceful state] to which as [members of Christ’s] one body you were also called [to live]. And be thankful (appreciative), [giving praise to God always].  Amplified Version

Do you see that phrase...[act as umpire]?

I didn't make that up. The peace of GOD should rule in our "spiritual heart" continually.

But, there is a problem!

The peace and conscience can only act in relationship to the information in our thought-life -

Look at Genesis 6.5 "The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination and intention of all human thinking was only evil continually."

Obviously, everything they used as an "acceptable" behavior, and the standards they lived by were totally unacceptable.

When Adam and Eve were in the garden in Eden before sinning - their standard of thinking came directly from the tree of life.

It was peaceful.

There was no problems, no shame, as they fed off the information that directly came from GOD Himself.

Their conscience was in full harmony with GOD's order and GOD's words.

But after the fall and Adam and Eve were driven from the garden - the information they lived by changed.

The information they had received on from GOD was shut down. Angels cut off access to that tree. They had no access to GOD information again.

Instead the standard guidance they now lived by, came directly from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. This is where the serpent lived and spoke to Eve out of, and still occupies today.

So the conscience of the Adam family is now governed by a different standard.

The result came quickly. Adam's son Cain killed his brother Abel

BAD information equals - a bad conscience - equals bad behavior

That is why some people or communities have "no conscience".

Hitler had no conscience because of the evil information he lived by.

Some families also live by "difficult to understand" standards. They accept stealing, cheating, killing as normal acts when they do not get their own way...

We play only by the rules we have bought into...

Baseball umpires must know all the rules of baseball...when they apply, how they are to be interpreted...

If he doesn't know the rules and how to umpire a game - the players will refuse to allow him to officiate at any game...

In the same way we need to know the rules of the Kingdom of GOD...

As we feed new information into our thoughts, and imagination - the peace of GOD is continually updating what behavior is acceptable.

When we violate the "word of GOD" - the Holy Spirit moves on our conscience and makes the call...

"Unacceptable"

Repent. Bring it to the Throne for mercy and His grace...

What happens when our conscience intervenes...

1 John 1.9

"If we [freely] admit that we have sinned and confess our sins, He is faithful and just (true to His own nature and promises) and will forgive our sins [dismiss our lawlessness] and [continuously] cleanse us from all unrighteousness [everything not in conformity to His will in purpose, thought, and action]."

Our conscience prods us, condemns us, and testifies against us - because the conscience knows what is going on under the surface...in the thoughts, and where the spiritual decisions are made.

Our conscience reminds us of our sins, takes away the peace, and insists on doing something about what we have done, that we know is wrong by the newly founded standards being developed within us.

This become an acute awareness of guilt.

That insists that we right the wrong by asking forgiveness of the person and re-reimbursing what is true and accurate...

Joseph's brother's had a conscience...finally!

They had no conscience.

They wanted to get rid of "the dreamer".

But things changed later...

Genesis 37. 18-24 "They saw him from afar, and before he came near to them they conspired against him to kill him. 19 They said to one another, “Here comes this dreamer. 20 Come now, let us kill him and throw him into one of the pits. Then we will say that a fierce animal has devoured him, and we will see what will become of his dreams.” 21 But when Reuben heard it, he rescued him out of their hands, saying, “Let us not take his life.” 22 And Reuben said to them, “Shed no blood; throw him into this pit here in the wilderness, but do not lay a hand on him”—that he might rescue him out of their hand to restore him to his father. 23 So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe, the robe of many colors that he wore. 24 And they took him and threw him into a pit. The pit was empty; there was no water in it."

Their conscience kicks in...

Genesis 42.21-22 "Speaking among themselves, they said, “Clearly we are being punished because of what we did to Joseph long ago. We saw his anguish when he pleaded for his life, but we wouldn’t listen. That’s why we’re in this trouble.”

22 “Didn’t I tell you not to sin against the boy?” Reuben asked. “But you wouldn’t listen. And now we have to answer for his blood!”

What is the relationship between the conscience and sickness or mental stress?

Let's look at how GOD made man...

Genesis 2.7

"Then the Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground. He breathed the breath of life into the man’s nostrils, and the man became a living person."

When GOD breathed into man - it was the breath of life and man's "engines" or "inner systems" started up. The heart beat, the flow of blood, the digestive system, the eye blink, etc - all became automatic.

Let me paint another picture...

We want to buy a computer...

How does a computer operate? Does it just operate on its own?

No. Every computer needs to have a master system downloaded...it could be from MicroSoft, IBM, Apple, Nokia or others. This system becomes the life of the computer...

Microsoft puts a system into the computer. It has programs, software, memory, ability to recognize viruses, and offers a platform whereby we can use the computer successfully. They now provide the cloud, updates, etc.

It's the same way within our body. GOD placed the system in each one of us...the sleep cycles, the skin restoration, the breathing apparatus - all vital components to allow the body to run smoothly...

Does your conscience know what you expect from yourself?

Part of this system is the conscience and GOD linked it to other components... there are 40 of them [see them here].

Let's take just one as an example...

It is "self control". When this is violated...by "anger" - the conscience sets off an alarm, a warning, - letting us know that something we are thinking about doing, or something we have done is wrong - and needs attention - just like a "virus warning" on the computer, or a smoke or fire alarm in a home...

Shame and guilt kick in - and the solution requires our attention...

It may require repentance, forgiveness or some other action - That you and I had better know about...otherwise, in a crisis we could be pouring gasoline on the fire instead of water..."a soft answer" turns away wrath [anger]. If we do not know that - we will make matters worse...

How I allowed anger and a 12 year grudge to land myself in a hospital with stomach cancer...

Read about it here

There are consequences.

Learn the 40 built-in components that GOD expects us to live by.

Just like engine parts...break one, and the engine stops running.

When we violate those - we suffer loss.

We can resist and refuse our conscience. This leads to having a dead conscience caused by choosing to defy the conscience and willingly and deliberately violating what we know and understand to do right. Refusing to respond to the guilt and conscience leads the heart to harden, and become unable to convict us of sin or wrong...a very dangerous place to be in. Genesis 6.5 led GOD to destroy the people through a flood...[Noah's Ark]. They were beyond hope.

We do have hope.

Do yourself a favor and learn each of the 40 components we should all know...

Learn also the virus that attacks each one of them.

But, our conscience will have no power, no authority unless and until we get the right information and place into into our "spiritual storehouse" - our mind, thoughts, and imaginations -

Like David, we can change from glory to glory, from weakness to strength - but it has to be done GOD's way. As David said, "Thy Word have I hid in my heart, that I may not sin against Thee." Psalms 119.11

Is this what you want? Or, are you just joking around...
