Wine has its place, but deceives many with promises of pleasures which it never can give.

Today's Daily Verse is found in Proverbs 20.1

"Wine produces mockers; alcohol leads to brawls. Those led astray by drink cannot be wise.       - New Living Translation

Noah got hooked on his own wine...brought shame

Genesis 9.21

"One day he drank some wine he had made, and he became drunk and lay naked inside his tent"

Noah, a farmer, was the first to plant a vineyard. He drank from its wine, got drunk and passed out, naked in his tent. Ham, the father of Canaan, saw that his father was naked and told his two brothers who were outside the tent. Shem and Japheth took a cloak, held it between them from their shoulders, walked backward and covered their father’s nakedness, keeping their faces turned away so they did not see their father’s exposed body.

The good...

1 Timothy 5.23

"Timothy, stop drinking only water, and drink a little wine. This will help your stomach, and you will not be sick so often."

John 2.1-9

"When the master of ceremonies tasted the water that was now wine, not knowing where it had come from (though, of course, the servants knew), he called the bridegroom over.

“A host always serves the best wine first,” he said. “Then, when everyone has had a lot to drink, he brings out the less expensive wine. But you have kept the best until now!”

1 Corinthians 11.23

"23 For I pass on to you what I received from the Lord himself. On the night when he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took some bread 24 and gave thanks to God for it. Then he broke it in pieces and said, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this to remember me.” 25 In the same way, he took the cup of wine after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant between God and his people—an agreement confirmed with my blood. Do this to remember me as often as you drink it.”

The bad...

Proverbs 23.32-35

"For in the end it bites like a poisonous snake; it stings like a viper.
"You will see hallucinations, and you will say crazy things.
"You will stagger like a sailor tossed at sea, clinging to a swaying mast.
"And you will say, “They hit me, but I didn’t feel it. I didn’t even know it when they beat me up. When will I wake up so I can look for another drink?"

Luke 21.34-36

34 “Watch out! Don’t let your hearts be dulled by carousing and drunkenness, and by the worries of this life. Don’t let that day catch you unaware, like a trap. For that day will come upon everyone living on the earth. 36 Keep alert at all times. And pray that you might be strong enough to escape these coming horrors and stand before the Son of Man.”

Why is drinking so seductive?

Like many of the "so-called" promises of pleasure and enjoyment like wealth, fame, gambling, etc - wine and alcohol cannot, and will never be able to deliver.

The results of drinking are as a venomous reptile, taken into the bosom, whose bite sets the veins on fire.

Immorality is linked with drunkenness, and all respect for oneself goes out the window when the brain is controlled by this deadly poison.

The will is destroyed.

The unnatural craving leads to destruction and brokenness

Lot's daughters used wine to get father in bed...

Genesis 19.32-34

""Come, let us make our father drink wine, and let us lie with him that we may preserve our family through our father." 33So they made their father drink wine that night, and the firstborn went in and lay with her father; and he did not know when she lay down or when she arose. 34On the following day, the firstborn said to the younger, "Behold, I lay last night with my father; let us make him drink wine tonight also; then you go in and lie with him, that we may preserve our family through our father."…

Habakkuk 2.15-16

"Woe to you who make your neighbors drink, Who mix in your venom even to make them drunk So as to look on their nakedness!

"You will be filled with disgrace rather than honor. Now you yourself drink and expose your own nakedness. The cup in the LORD'S right hand will come around to you, And utter disgrace will come upon your glory.…"

Wine and alcohol is used as a weapon against the innocent. GOD will judge it all!

What are we to do?

Romans 14.21-22

"It is better not to eat meat or drink wine or do anything else if it might cause another believer to stumble.

"You may believe there’s nothing wrong with what you are doing, but keep it between yourself and God. Blessed are those who don’t feel guilty for doing something they have decided is right."

Romans 15.1

"We who are strong must be considerate of those who are sensitive about things like this. We must not just please ourselves."

  • Be an example to those who are weaker. Careless indulgence in that which is to others like the "poison of an adder" - is most inconsistent and thoughtless.

And a warning...

1 Corinthians 10.12 "Let him that thinketh he stands, take heed, lest he fall"

  • We are all vulnerable. Do not boast. Many with splendid "talents" from the Lord have been brutalized by this lust

Ephesians 5.18

"Don’t be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit..." NLT version
