Agur was a plain, simple man, of little natural ability, yet the Lord opened his understanding, revealing to him great and precious things.

Today's Daily Verse is found in Proverbs 30.2-3

"Surely I am more carnal than any man and have not the understanding of a man. 3 I neither learned wisdom nor have the knowledge of the holy."

Nothing for certain is known about the writer, Agur, but it is evident that we profit from his writings because he was inspired...

1 Peter 1.20-21

"Above all, you must realize that no prophecy in Scripture ever came from the prophet’s own understanding, 21 or from human initiative. No, those prophets were moved by the Holy Spirit, and they spoke from God."

This is remarkable...

Agur's words were a prophecy - which is divine instructions from GOD.

  • What is overwhelming here is Agur's humbling sense of his own ignorance
  • If only men and women today would flow from the same humility
  • He is saying, "You come to me for instruction...but surely I am more brutish than any man, not having the advantage of "learning wisdom".

Listen to Amos...

Amos 7.14-15

"But Amos replied, “I’m not a professional prophet, and I was never trained to be one. I’m just a shepherd, and I take care of sycamore-fig trees. 15 But the Lord called me away from my flock and told me, ‘Go and prophesy to my people in Israel.’"

Daniel

Daniel 4.18

"“‘Belteshazzar [Daniel], that was the dream that I, King Nebuchadnezzar, had. Now tell me what it means, for none of the wise men of my kingdom can do so. But you can tell me because the spirit of the holy gods is in you.’

This is what happened to Peter

Matthew 16.15-17

"Then he asked them, “But who do you say I am?”

16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”

17 Jesus replied, “You are blessed, Simon son of John, because my Father in heaven has revealed this to you. You did not learn this from any human being.

The "good stuff" comes directly from GOD.

Anyone can humble themselves before GOD and be such a channel for His Words and instruction...

  • Agur came to the point where he was convince that he had less going for him than any man
  • What a position to be in!

Inspiration is just GOD taking up a poor [in spirit] and feeble individual and so controlling his mind, tongue and pen as to purely give forth accurate words from the Almighty GOD.
